Background Information

What: OpenMusicMedia Toronto is a chance to get together on a semi-regular basis for drinks & conversation around the past, present and future intersection of music, media and digital culture. The purpose of the group will be for people with similar interests and passions to meet and discuss in a relaxed and open environment.  There are no vested interests, no politics and no agendas.

Who: Open to music label folks, journalists, social media types,  entrepreneurs, technologists/developers, music geeks, music bloggers and future thinkers.

Cost: The meetup is FREE and open to everyone. All we gratefully ask is if you can RSVP here.

Theme: Each meetup will feature a theme or topic that will drive the discussion for the evening. For our first meetup, Josh Newman and Gabriel Nijmeh will lead the discussion on direct to fan relationships (D2F) and the impact technology has had in bringing the two closer together than ever before.

Here a few questions to help kickstart the conversation:

  • How has new technology/media helped fans and artists connect?
  • How does a band manage these relationships as they grow in popularity and time constraints become a factor?
  • A look at artists such as Trent Reznor, Imogen Heap, Amanda Palmer, Moonalice (and others) who have used social media platforms like Twitter to connect with fans. What about others?
  • How does a band find that right balance between interacting and creating?
  • Is a direct to fan relationship model necessary for success? What if an artist/band decides to limit the interaction?
  • And as the discussion progresses through the evening, we are sure to cover important topics like D2F as a business model, marketing, distribution, promotion and the technology that enables all of this.

We look forward to seeing you out on September 30th! If you have any questions or comments, please send us an email.

Thanks!
Josh (@3rdparty) and Gabriel (@gcn1)
